The Century 21 Exposition was a final tribute to 1950s optimism and trust in technology. Robert M. Hayes, the computer scientist who trained Library 21’s librarians, reminisced:
Boeing was booming, the lumber industry was booming, and Seattle was really at the peak of its economic and intellectual and cultural boom. Magnificent city…To be able to come up there every month and spend a week in Seattle was an absolute joy (1).
